Michael was called
to the Bar in April, 1976 and has been in private practice
throughout his career. He started as a general practitioner
and began specializing in Corporate and Commercial Law
in the early 1980's. Today Michael's practice is restricted
to Corporate and Commercial law, with a strong concentration
in corporate and personal tax and estate planning, including
testamentary and inter vivos trusts, holding companies,
Section (85) and (86) re-organizations, integrating
various insurance vehicles to fund estate plans and
the administration of estates and testamentary trusts.
Michael also handles franchising work, both in establishing
Franchises with Franchisors and protecting Franchisees.
Michael was involved as a Corporate seminar leader
for the Ontario Bar Admissions Program in the area of
Corporate and Commercial Law for a number of years.
In 2004, he became one of a handful of lawyers to be
certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist
in Corporate and Commercial Law. In 2006, Michael became
a member of S.T.E.P. (Society of Estate and Tax Practitioners).
In 2006 he was also invited to join the Professional
Financial Planning Center, which, since its genesis
at the University of Sherbrooke, runs planning seminars
In Ontario and Quebec for owner-managers on business
ownership transfer and retirement exit strategies. Most
recently, Michael has been approved as an expert author
for www.EvanCarmichael.com, an on line community of
over 150,000 entrepreneurs focusing on a wide range
of business issues.
In addition to the above Michael is also a member of
the Law Society of Upper Canada and TIE (the Indus Entrepreneurs).
In his spare time he enjoys both photography (mostly
underwater) and Scuba Diving a sport in which he has
attained a rating of Instructor Trainer Evaluator.
